Gumtree baby seller pleads guilty

The Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court has heard that the 20-year-old mother accused of trying to sell her baby on the Gumtree website wants to plead guilty to the crime.

She appeared briefly in court and chose to abandon her bail application. The suspect was arrested by the Hawks following a tip-off from a member of the public.

The first advert was asking for R 5 000 for her 19-month-old baby. The second was disguised as a baby car seat sale in the Baby and Kids section.

She was immediately arrested after police contacted her for the sale. She is now facing a charge of human trafficking.

The baby is currently in a place of safety.

The matter has been adjourned to November 5 for consultation with her legal representative!
